The Platelets Have Vanished
Kevin woke up with a nose bleed this morning that was difficult to stop. His gums also bled with teeth brushing yesterday and today--all indications that his platelets are very low. He had another nose bleed this afternoon that was very difficult to stop. After calls to the oncologist, Option Care came out to do a lab draw. The results won't be in until the morning, but all indications are that his platelets are depleted and he'll need a blood transfusion tomorrow. Hopefully he won't have another nose bleed tonight. Right now he has virtually no clotting factor. He has absolutely no energy and feels generally lousy. There is such a fine line between the GCSF bringing the counts up to high and the side effects that encompasses, and having the counts drop so low when off of it. Needless to say, they will be doing much more frequent lab draws to monitor it more closely from now on. Pray that we get through the night without any bleeds, or we may end up in ER. It is still amazing to me how the counts can fluctuate from one extreme to another so rapidly. This cancer thing is beginning to be quite annoying!!
